All variable depth or expandable liners are of the overlap type. No one can or should sell you a beaded variable depth or expandable liner. If they offer it, run as fast as you can.

In the swimming pool industry, we refer to variable depth and expandable liners as being one and the same. This is a true statement! However, there are two types of manufactured liners that fit the bill. The first type is usually called the expandable liner. This type of liner is made by simply offering a more generous amount of vinyl in the bottom section of the liner.

It is like putting a King Size sheet on a Queen Size bed. It will allow you to dig the center or one end of the pool deeper than the typical 48" or 52" depth. There are some negatives associated with this type of installation.

First and foremost are wrinkles. The pool cove is the most crucial part of the aboveground pool installation.

The pool cove is the earth or dirt mound that affords you the transition from the pool floor to the pool wall. The pool cove is usually about a 4"-6" rounded area on the inside perimeter of the pool. We strongly recommend the Gladon Original pool cove for this purpose, not the inexpensive peel-n-stick stuff. The Gladon Original cove is made from closed cell polyurethane that is press fit into your bottom track at the wall base. When you position the bottom seam of the liner on the dirt or Gladon cove you may have not dug the pool deep enough or dug it too deep causing too much vinyl material on the floor or not enough material and the liner is overstretched.

Simply put, with the typical expandable liner to 60" or 72" there is no way for you to pre-dig the deeper area accurately where you will have a wrinkle-free bottom. If you do get one, it is by luck. Wrinkles on the pool floor are BAD.

First of all, automatic vacuums get stuck, algae adhere to it, and liners fail sooner. Next: You will need binder clips and small cardboard pieces to protect the liner from being ripped or snagged. The binder clips are used to hold the liner over the top seats. If you suspect any sharp edges on your top seats or pool that would rip the liner it would be wise to place duct tape over the area(s).

Liner is being held in place with binder clips. Now, you take an old wool sock and place it over the garden hose male end where it touches the pool liner. The weight of the water will gradually cause the liner to stretch into position. Little by little, you release small sections of the liner that is being held by the binder clips over the wall. Little by little is the way to do it, probably 4"-8" at one time.

Keep letting the liner push into position. After the liner has been filled to the point where it is down on the base of the pool, you can release all the binder clips and remove the top seats. Place the liner over the corrugated metal wall and put the plastic coping clips on. Place the wall stabilizer over this and proceed to install the top seats and top seat covers. The liner is now fully installed.

Simply cut out for the skimmer and return fittings. Do not do this until the water is at least half way up the pool wall. You want to be sure that the liner is seated against the pool wall.
